R11 is a colorless and odorless CFC refrigerant that was completely banned from production under the Montreal Protocol for depleting the ozone. It is a low-pressure refrigerant that was commonly used in centrifugal chillers, and before the 1970’s it was used as a propellant for aerosols. The refrigerant is typically stored in orange drums or containers.

Replacements

R123 (HCFC): In 2020, all production and importation of virgin R123 for use in new HVAC equipment and chillers was prohibited. Now, there are restrictive production allowances to manufacture and import R123 to service existing equipment. In 2030, there will be a complete phaseout of all virgin HCFC production and importation, however reclaimed R123 will be allowed.
