R113 is a low pressure refrigerant used as a refrigerant in cooling systems, as a foam-blowing agent, and as a cleanser for electrical equipment. Production was banned in 1996 under the Montreal Protocol. R113 is typically stored in violet drums or containers.

Replacements

R123 (HCFC): In 2020, all production and importation of virgin R123 for use in new HVAC equipment and chillers was prohibited. Now, there are restrive production allowances to manufacture and import R123 to service existing equipment. In 2030, there will be a complete phaseout of all virgin HCFC production and importation, however reclaimed R123 will be allowed.
