R114 is a colorless and odorless CFC refrigerant that was completely banned from production under the Montreal Protocol for depleting the ozone. R114 is used in centrifugal chillers and is known for being used in the maritime industry or other applications where corrosion is more common. R114 is typically stored in navy (dark blue) drums or containers.

Replacements

R124 (HCFC): In 2020, all production and importation of virgin R124 for use in new HVAC equipment and chillers was prohibited. Now, there are restrictive production allowances to manufacture and import R124 to service existing equipment. In 2030, there will be a complete phaseout of all virgin HCFC production and importation, however reclaimed R124 will be allowed.

R236fa (HFC): All virgin HFC production and importation are being phased down as part of the AIM Act. Reclaimed HFCs are available and allowed.
